Thinking Alike

Scott over at Polite Dissent is also doing a Comic Book Cover Advent Calendar, and Greg at Raw Feed is too.

It'll be interesting to see if we duplicate at all. Unlikely, as I've identified about 200 different potential covers. (Although Greg--darn him--has already beat me to the punch on the Killer Snowmen from Strange Adventures!) Alas, none of them is a Christmas cover with a monkey. Can anyone help me on that score?

"The Story of Her Life"

Our campus's student newspaper, The Michigan Daily, has a two-page spread in today's Weekend section profiling cartoonist/professor Phoebe Gloeckner:

“But there is that little-girl voice in you thinking, ‘You wicked child!’ I drew things like that ever since I was very small, for my classmates, and I think I did get in trouble,” says Gloeckner. As a young artist, her work went virtually unseen by family and friends; when her work first got published, she assumed that no one read the underground comic books in which her art appeared.

You can read the online version here.

(It was Prof. Gloeckner's recent appointment to the faculty here that was the primary motivator for us starting our comic & graphic novel collection here at the library.)

Christmas Covers - December 2

For each day of December until Christmas I'm featuring a Comic Cover Advent Calendar. Just move your mouse over the image to reveal today's special Holiday comic cover. Click on the image to get a larger version from GCD.

Today's cover is from Dell's 1953 Walt Disney's Christmas Parade #9. The cover by Paul Murry & Norm McGary features Donald, Goofy, Mickey and the rest of the gang peeking out from a Christmas tree.

Just 23 more 'get-ups' until Santa!
