Quick DC Crossover Reviews

Countdown #44Countdown #44
by Paul Dini, Adam Beechen, Carlos Magno & Jay Leisten

Countdown is quickly moving into disaster territory. Each week brings 20-odd pages of set-up, but any big event--like the Rogues killing The Flash--happen off panel in another book. I'm not one of those opposed to the Mary Marvel-gets-Black Adam's-powers storyline per se, but it takes up eight pages in this issue and not much happens. The Jimmy Olsen story holds some interest, but it's moving slowly. And I fear for poor Holly Robinson, a fave character stuck into this book and drawn like a supermodel. Finally, the back-up "History of the Multiverse" would probably be better served as links to WikiPedia. And who the heck ever wanted to see Monarch return?

Amazons Attack #3Amazons Attack #3
by Will Pfeifer & Pete Woods

In general I enjoy Pfeifer's writing; Finals is one of my favorite 'forgotten' Vertigo minis, and I'm enjoying his current work on Catwoman. So it's sad to see him struggling under the editorial plot hammer of Amazons Attack. Clearly there's a reason why everyone in this book is acting like a pod person, but by this point the plot and reasons need to be revealed and the story moving on to the next act. At least Peter Woods' art is pretty.

Rating: 2.5 (of 5)

Green Lantern: Sinestro Corps Special #1Green Lantern: Sinestro Corps Special #1
by Geoff Johns, Ethan Van Sciver, & Dave Gibbons

Let's end on a high note: This is how you kick off a crossover. Sinestro gathers up the final members of his anti-Corps, including some nasty, evil villains, and the surprise big bad is revealed on the last page. This is prologue, but it's a prologue where things happen, secrets are revealed, and a sense of dread hang over it all. It gives a sense that this is going to be an important and exciting event, not because the marketers tell us it's going to be important and exciting, but because the story makes it so. Story-driven event comics? What a concept!

Sunday is Monkey Covers day here at YACB. Because there's nothing better than a comic with a monkey on the cover.

FCBM3 Wrap-up

Free Comic Book Month 3 finally wrapped-up earlier this week (I suppose it should be "Free Comic Book Month-and-a-Half"!). Everybody who entered got a free comic! Participation was down this year with only 49 entries; correspondingly, the number of free comics I gave out was also down to just 111. Nearly all of the entires were new people who hadn't entered in previous years.

The postal increase in mid-May was brutal; sure the price of letters only went up a couple of cents, but the price for mailing comic-sized envelopes went up significantly more, and the Media Mail rate went up a whopping 34% (making it usually more expensive than first class for lighter-weight items like comics).

FCBM always brings increased traffic to the blog, and May 2007 was my biggest month yet. However, traffic overall has been way up in 2007, so the bump from FCBM3 wasn't nearly as pronounced as t has been in past years.

Now for my favorite part of the wrap-up, the list of most popular comics that were listed by entrants:

11 people: Fables

6 people: All-Star Superman; Y, the Last Man

5 people: The Spirit

4 people: Astonishing X-Men; Birds of Prey; Daredevil; The Walking Dead

3 people: Amazing Spider-Man; Astro City; Batman; Death Note; Ex Machina; Flash; Hellboy; Incredible Hulk; Invincible; Invisibles; Justice League of America; Justice Society of America; Robin; Runaways; Scott Pilgrim; Spider-Man; Superman/Batman; X-Factor

2 people: Action Comics; All New Atom; Bone; Castle Waiting; Detective Comics; DMZ; Fantastic Four; Fell; Hellsing; Hitman; Manhunter; Marvel Adv Avengers; Marvel Zombies; Planetary; Promethea; Punisher Max; Sandman; She-Hulk; Sin City; Superman; Top Ten; Transmetropolitan; Usagi Yojimbo

Plus another 95 titles listed by just one person each.

Thanks go out to everyone who linked to FCBM3, including: Rob, David, Shane, Johanna, Lyle, and Michael.

And of course thanks to everyone who entered!

New This Week: June 20, 2007

Based on the NCRL, here are some comics you may want to look at picking up at your friendly local comic shop tomorrow:

If you've been paying attention, it will come as no surprise that the Pick of the Week is Yotsuba&! vol. 4 by Kiyohiko Azuma. It's funny, it's adorable, it's smart, it's clever, and it's manga. What more do you want for your $10?

In other comics:

In addition to Yotsuba&!, AD Vision also have the 11th volume of Cromartie High School.

About Comics have Schulz's Youth in hardcover and paperback.

Alternative Comics have a new issue of Hickee (vol. 3 #3).

Amaze Ink/Slave Labor have a new issue of Wonderland.

Antarctic have a new issue of Gold Digger (#86) and the second issue of Gold Digger Peeba Tales Summer Fun Special.

Boom! have trade collections of Hero Squared and Tag.

DC have a second trade collection of Blue Beetle, and a first collection of Stars and Stripe (under the JSA Presents pre-title; it's a great all-ages super-hero title from before Geoff Johns got all dismemberment-happy); and new issues of The Brave and The Bold (#4), Catwoman (#68), Countdown (#45), Ex Machina (#29), Hellblazer (#233), Justice League of America (#10), Legion in 31C (#3), and The Spirit (#7).

Fantagraphics have the second issue of Richard Sala's Delphine.

Girl Twirl Comics have the seventh collection of Jane's World.

Image have a collection of Phonogram and the debut issue of Madame Mirage.

Kenzer & Co. have the eighteenth Knights of the Dinner Table Bundle of Trouble.

Maerkle Press have the fouth issue of the romantic super-hero comedy Love and Capes.

Marvel have the third digest of Jeff Parker's Marvel Adventures The Avengers, which has both the MODOC story and the Ego the Loving Plant story, making it the second-best collection you'll buy this week (after Yotsuba&!, of course). There's also a hardcover collection of Parker's X-Men: First Class; and new issues of Captain America (#27), Marvel Avengers Iron Man (#2), Spider-Man/Fantastic Four (#3--that Parker guy again!), and Ultimate Spider-Man (#110).

Viz have a ton of manga, including the debut of Gin Tama and the 30th(!) volume of Inu Yasha.

Go, buy Yotsuba&! You won't be sorry!

Stack, Frank. The new adventures of Jesus : the second coming /Seattle, Wash. : Fantagraphics, 2006.

I want to drop Green Arrow, but DC won't let me!

I've been reading Green Arrow on autopilot for some time now. With last week's end to the regular series I figured it would be a good place to stop, especially since I think that the upcoming GA/BC wedding is coming off as forced and completely ignores 25 years worth of character evolution with both Ollie & Dinah.

But then I see that Andy Diggle & Jock are doing the GA Year One mini-series. Certainly I can't pass up Diggle & Jock working together again! Fine, says I—I'll just read the mini and call it quits.

But now DC announces that the artist on the new Green Arrow & Black Canary series will be none other than Cliff Chiang. Curse you, DC—you know that I cannot pass up anything drawn by Cliff Chiang!

But if Chiang ever leaves as the regular artist, I swear I'm dropping the book...

FCBM3 Day 40 Redux

Bill Doughty informs me that's he already has Runaways, vol. 5, which was chosen for him in day 40 (rats--I almost made it entirely through FCBM3 without giving someone something they already had!) So instead I'll be sending him issues #8-9 of Larry Gonick's Cartoon History of the Universe, featuring the histories of India and China respectively.

Runaways, vol. 5 will instead go to Edgardo Ortiz Guzman, whose initial entry was received in early June and had been deemed too late. But it's Edgardo's lucky day! His five comics that he likes are:

1. Y, the Last Man
2. Ex Machina
3. Superman/Batman
4. Rising Stars
5. Robin

New This Week: June 13, 2007

Based on the NCRL, here are some comics you may want to look at picking up at your friendly local comic shop tomorrow:

The Pick of the Week is Terry Moore's Strangers in Paradise #90. Not only is it the final issue of the popular, long-running series, but it may also mark the end of the self-published serial comic as a viable publication option.

In other comics:

Adhouse Books have The Aviary, a collection of Jamie Tanner's various minicomics and anthology pieces. If you've ever read any of them, you know you're in for a surreal treat (though I wouldn't recommend reading all 300+ pages at once!)

AiT/PlanetLAR have the first issue of Black Diamond.

Angry Dog Press have the sixth volume of their Potlach Project anthology.

Antarctic have the landmark 150th issue of Ben Dunn's Ninja High School.

Boom! have new issues of Dominion (#2) and Tag: Cursed (#4).

Dark Horse have a new issue of BPRD: Garden of Souls (#4) and the eigth volume of Star Wars: Clone Wars Adventures.

DC have the first oversized hardcover volume of Jack Kirby's Forth World Omnibus; new collections for Fables (vol. 9) and Gotham Central (vol. 5); a Showcase Presents volume for The Atom; the fourth volume of Emma; the second Minx title, Re-gifters; and new issues of Countdown (#46), DMZ (#20), Fables (#62), Hawkgirl (#65), and StormWatch PHD (#8).

IDW collect Angel: Auld Lang Syne into a trade.

Image have a new issue of Noble Causes (#30) and a "pilot" issue of Elephantmen.

Marvel kick off their big summer crossover World War Hulk and also collect the whole Planet Hulk story into one massive hardcover. Also a massive hardcover is the second Fantasic Four Omnibus; not quite as masive is the Killraven hardcover collection. There's a seventh volume in the Fantastic Four Visionaries: John Byrne series; a new Franklin Richards One-Shot; and new issues of Blade (#10); Kabuki Reflections (#8); and Punisher War Journal (#8).

TokyoPop have the second (and final) volume of Amy Kim Ganter's Sorcerers and Secretaries.

Viz have the third volume of Inubaka: Crazy for Dogs.

Quick Boom! Reviews

Let's take a look at some recent #1s from Boom! Studios (all comics $3.99 ea.):

From top to bottom, Salvador #1 (writers: Mark Polish, Michael Polish & Sebastian Jones; artist: Steph Stamb) look sand feels like a repurposed Silver Surfer proposal. A mysterious, silver-tinged, faceless humanoid falls to Earth, gliding on a couple of large feathers. In this wordless issue, full of many full-page splash panels, he just kind of glides around. It looks pretty, but it's over very quick and feels very derivative.

Also somewhat derivative, but this time overtly, is Dominion #1, a repackaging of Keith Giffen & Ross Richie's aborted Image series from a few years back. This time out the action moves from Australia to Chicago, courtesy of writer Michael Alan Nelson & artist Tim Hamilton. All over the city random people break out with barely controllable super-powers, apparently as a prelude to some sort of alien attack. Hopefully this time out the series will last long enough that we'll get a feel of what's going on.

Hunter's Moon #1, written by Oscar winner James L. White and drawn by Dalibor Talajic, is the story of a corporate mover-and-shaker who takes him estranged son on a rural hunting trip. But things veer into thriller territory when things go wrong. Having the main characters be an African-American family in what would typically be the domain of white protagonists is not only encouraging from a diversity point of view, but also brings race issues subtly into the mix. This is an effective first issue that leaves the reader wanting to see what happens next.

2 Guns #1 is one of the most effective first issues I've read in a while. The story starts off with what looks like an homage to Pulp Fiction, but quickly veers off in a multitude of direction. At the core there's an undercover DEA agent who ends up planning a bank heist, with motives that may or may not be entirely pure. Veteran writer Steven Grant shows that he's still got plenty of writing chops, and artist Mat Santolouco is with him every step of the way (and special notice for colorists from Popart Studios, whose bright colors help the story to pop off the page). The story if full of plot, action, and characterization, without ever feeling too rushed or condensed.

Ratings:
Salvador #1: 2 (of 5)
Dominion #1: 3 (of 5)
Hunter's Moon #1: 3.5 (of 5)
2 Guns #1: 4 (of 5)

Stan Lee in the Peoples Archive

A marketer from the Peoples Archive Website dropped by YACB central to let us know that Marvel legend Stan Lee is featured in an interview about his life on their Website. Broken up into bite-sized chunks, it would appear that anyone can view the less-than-YouTube-quality version free, but higher quality video requires a subscription to the site. Lee talks about not only his time at Marvel, but also his early life and his later business ventures.

Starting later today I'll continue giving away free comics to people who have already entered. However, I will not be accepting any more new entries.

Which American Comics?

In yesterday's ¡Journalista!, Dirk hilights an 1.5-year-old post on Manganews, a translation of an essay by Yoshikazu Hayashida: "What makes Globalization of Japanese Comics Successful?" Go read it; I'll wait here...

Back? Okay!

The essay starts out well, with Hayashida making the accurate argument that the format of American serial comics (24- to 32-page monthlies, full-color, good quality paper) has driven the artform into a niche; whereas the Japanese standard format (large anthologies printed on the worst paper possible) has allowed manga to prosper and acquire a critical mass of content that is being exploited throughout the world.

There are historical reasons for this. At one time American comics were lengthier, had multiple stories per issue, etc. But as price pressures hit, American publishers struggled to keep the price at 10¢, lowering the page count (and ramping up the ad space) to keep the price of comics at a perceived sweet spot that could be afforded by children. In doing so they priced themselves right out of the newsstand and into comics specialty shops.

However, later in the essay, Hayashida goes off into flat-out wrong territory.

There is another reason why American comics stick to super heroes, aside from the page limit. It is because it is convenient for publishers to keep copyrights to themselves. Comics dealing with super heroes aren’t drawn by one author only. Numerous comic artists and writers draw the characters. The end result of this is that publishers insist that the creators can hold no copyrights. This an obstacle to the development of American comics and prevents improvements in quality.

I'm sure that this will come as news to comics creators like Dave Sim, Wendy & Richard Pini, Kevin Eastman & Peter Laird, Jeff Smith, Terry Moore, Chip Ware, Alison Bechdel, Sergio Aragones, Kevin Huizenga, Colleen Doran, Frank Miller, Brian O'Malley, etc.!

The statement that "publishers insist that the creators can hold no copyrights" is demonstrably wrong, even for the big two.

Hayashida makes the common mistake that American Comics = Super-heroes. They're not. Outside of comic specialty shops, they're not even in the majority.

Oddly, it was the exact same historical market conditions that led to the slimming and ghetoization of American comics which also led to the small-press and self-publishing movement. This movement has led not only to greater creative control and ownership, but also to great creativity and experimentation. I would argue that the past 30 years has seen at least as much experimentation and creativity in North American comics as in Japanese Manga (though admittedly my knowledge of the underground and art-manga movements in Japan is spotty at best).

While we're at it, let us put to rest the argument that there is no creativity or quality in corporate-owned super-hero comics. Watchmen, The Dark Knight Returns, Morrison's Doom Patrol, Gaiman's Sandman; all American corporate-owned comics, and all quite successful on both a creative and commercial level. Sure they are the exception rather than the norm, but they do exist and we'll continue to see the occasional gem surface.

The Japanese, North American, and European comic markets all took different paths of development over the past forty years. With the advent of globalization we're now seeing that divergent paths starting to cross again; a situation that I think will be beneficial to the art of comics as a whole. But to claim that one market is inherently more creative than another is sheer folly.
