YACB Bulletins
ITEM! Over at Polite Dissent, Scott has his picks for the best and worst comic book medicine of 2005. I always admire how Scott is able to use comic book stories as springboards to explain medical concepts.
ITEM! DCBS have their January orders and specials up. Blue Beetle, Squadron Supreme, Ms. Marvel, and Fantastic Four: First Family all clock in with 75 cent first issues (75% off); and half-off trades (and hard covers) include Batman: Dark Detective, Green Lantern: No Fear HC, Ultimate Iron Man HC, Alias Omnibus, Shadowplay, Banana Sunday, and East Coast Rising. They also have all of the DC, Image & Marvel comics at 40% off (instead of the usual 35%), including the DC One Year Later titles, so I might sample one or two extra titles to see if the new directions are any good.
ITEM! David Welsh has started up MangaTrade, a Yahoo! Group for people who want to swap manga. He's trying to keep things simple--post what you have, go through other's post to find what you want, make a connection--so there's no credits or any of that kind of stuff.
ITEM! Retail, a new King Features syndicated strip by Norm Feuti, debuted on Sunday. I can't that it wowed me or anything--few syndicated strips do these days--but Feuti has a pleasant enough style and the subject--life in a department store--could evolve into some interesting stories, even if it does seem to have been chosen for maximum focus group optimability. ITEM! "Screw being mainstream anyway. Comics has a lot of its cultural power not just as a secondary art form, but as a semi-disgraced secondary art form." Tom Spurgeon is a smart guy.
ITEM! Apparently TokyoPop has a two-volume anthology of Star Wars Manga out in Japan, with an English version due soon--but only in the UK, since the US Star Wars license is held by Dark Horse. Expect to see much North American business for Amazon UK... (via ATR)

Monkey Covers
Sunday is Monkey Covers day here at YACB. Because there's nothing better than a comic with a monkey on the cover.After a month off, Monkey Covers are back! And to start the year off right, here's Colleen Coover's cover to Banana Sunday #1, one of my most favoritest comics of 2005.

YACB Bulletins
ITEM! The WCBS-TV piece "A New Golden Age of Comics?" is remarkable primarily because it is edited so as to eliminate a consistant narrative and undermine the points that it is trying to make.
ITEM! Beleagured Alias Comics puts out a press release last week trumpeting the release of Victoria's Secret Service #1 this month--too bad it doesn't actually ship from Diamond in December.
ITEM! When a classic geek band and a seminal surreal comix artist get together, the results have to be good! Kim Deitch animates a short music video for They Might Be Giants with "Trees" (click on the link that says 'Dallas'). (via FLOG!)
ITEM! My Holiday Mix over on Yet Another Music Radio was a big hit. I mean huge! Who knew people would like my eclectic blend of Christmas music so much? But all good things must end, so I've put up a new mix: 2005 Favorites, featuring nearly 3.5 hours of some of my favorite tracks from the past year. Stop by and give a listen when you get a chance.

New This Week: December 29, 2005
Based on the NCRL list for this week's comics shipping from Diamond, here are a few things to look for at the local comic shop tomorrow:The Pick of the Week is Roadsong, vol. 1 by Allan Gross & Joanna Estep, the latest OEL Manga from TokyoPop. I met Estep briefly at SNAP! and ever since I've been greatly looking forward to this tale of musicians, sibling rivalry, and the mob.
In other comics:
Antarctic have issue #70 of Fred Perry's Gold Digger, which is odd because issue #69 came out just last week, and I'm sure that ol' Fred didn't turn #70 out in just a week...
Dark Horse have the penultimate issue of BPRD: The Black Flame (#5) and the debut volumes of their Harlequin Manga lina, A Girl in a Million (pink) and Response (violet).
DC have a trade of Lex Luthor: Man of Steel; the 6th Fables collection; and new issues of All Star Batman and Robin (#3), JLA Classified, and Solo (#8 - Teddy Kristiansen, with a story by Neil Gaiman).
Del Rey have a new volume of Negima! (vol. 8).
Drawn & Quarterly have a new issue of Jason Lutes' Berlin (#12).
iBooks have the 3rd volume of Blacksad, which is sure to have stunning art.
IDW bring back Peter David's Fallen Angel (#1).
Marvel debut Spider-Man Loves Mary Jane (must... avoid... obvious... joke...); and bring us new issues of Black Widow 2 (#4), Daredevil (#80), Drax the Destroyer (#4), She-Hulk 2 (#3), Ultimate Spider-Man (#88), X-Factor (#2), and X-Men and Power Pack (#3).
Speakeasy have a new issue of Rocketo (#4).
Sunday Press Books' Little Nemo in Slumberland hits comic shops, although don't count on getting a copy if you didn't pre-order.
Must be the last shipping day of the month, becuase TokyoPop is dumping a ton of product in comic shops (just in time for Christmas shopping!)
W.W. Norton's Will Eisner's Contract with God Trilogy hadcover also shows up.

In my other fantasy leagues I had a pretty good week: I won the consolation bracket in my public league with a 57-45 victory; and scored a respectable 314.20 points in my Pass & Kick league (still in last place though). I didn't do so well in my Basketball league, losing 2-6 to remain in 7th place (25-37-2).

YACB Bulletins
ITEM! Rivkah posts the results of her coloring contest. It's very interesting to see how different color schemes can really influence the character of the drawing.
ITEM! Tom Spurgeon reports over at The Pulse that Sunday Press Books has nearly sold out of its first 5000 copy printing of Little Nemo in Slumberland – So Many Splendid Sundays, even though the book is priced at $120 and was generally unavailable through traditional book outlets. We've ordered one copy for our library, and one of the historical libraries on campus has another.
ITEM! Love Manga asked a bunch of manga companies, creators and bloggers what there favortie manga of 2005 were, and compiled the results.
ITEM! Chris Butcher notes that, with a movie adaptation on the way and interest starting to peak, Frank Miller's 300 is unavailable to retailers, costing retailers and Dark Horse (and Frank Miller) sales. Dark Horse seems to have a history of not being able to keep trades in stock/print and missing out on obvious tie-in opportunities.
ITEM! I'm pretty sure that it's technically out-of-print, but Amazon has 5 copies of Moto Hagio's A, A' available to order. If you're looking for a way to spend those Amazon gift certificates you got for Christmas (or whatever your seasonal gift-exchanging holiday of choice) this would be an excellent thing on which to spend your money. (Thanks to David Welsh for the pointer.)

Coming from Archie and not from a mainstream manga publisher, del Rio's OEL Manga work doesn't receive the same level of interest as other titles, but for my money she has been turning out consistantly entertaining work and has me interested in a comic that I ordinarily wouldn't care a lick about.
