The day this cartoon ran in papers, my new email friend, Bernie, wrote and said "Wouldn't it have had more 'kick' if the can read 'Can-nibbles?'"

Yes, it probably would have, but I didn't think of it. Wish I had. When are you readers going to learn to weigh in with your ideas before I go to print?

The better punch line notwithstanding, I like this gag, especially the severed leg on the can label. I wondered if this cartoon might offend some readers, and I did get a few emails about it. The thought is disgusting, yes, but I find it not much more disgusting than eating the body parts of the corpses of other species. No matter who you're eating, somebody died in misery and left behind mourners.

Most humans don't believe non-human animals can mourn, but I know from experience that they do. That isn't the point of this cartoon, of course, it's just one of the many extras you get free of charge for reading this blog!

Kyle Baker does Hawkman

Apparently Kyle Baker is writing and drawing a Hawkman project for DC (the previous announcement of which I sadly missed.).

Baker is both writing and drawing, and has posted three pages of art on his blog, including a scene of Hawkman fighting a giant crab monster on the wing of an airplane.

This, my friends, promises to be seven kinds of awesome.

Pet Pigs and Peeves

The stem cell of this cartoon came from another occasional collaborator and dear, dear friend, Richard "Dick" Cabeza. I forgot what his original picture and caption were, but they were similar and I tweaked them into this delectable dealybobber.

This idea appeals to me because it was fun to render the pigs in disguises as they prepare to wreak havoc, but also because of my interest in animal rights, although that by itself would not have been enough to get me to bite on this gag. (so to speak)

Entirely off the subject of this cartoon, "wreak havoc" is one of the most frequently mispronounced terms in modern English. It seems people almost invariably say "wreck" havoc. I can understand the confusion, since "havoc" is often the result of "wrecking," but that isn't the correct phrase. Since ours is a living language (thank god, speaking a dead language is just creepy) it is only a matter of time before "wrecking havoc" will be considered correct. Which, as grammar catastrophes go, isn't such a bad thing. At least it basically means the same thing.

What's much worse is the changing of the term "couldn't care less." The overwhelming majority of Americans say "could care less" when, in fact, they mean "couldn't." This change is regrettable, because it means the opposite of what the speaker intends. Here's how:
If you care about something or someone, like, say, your grandmother or smoking pot, you "could" care less. That is to say, if you care, it is possible to care less.

If you care nothing about something or someone, you could not care less than you already do. Hence, you couldn't care less whether Dick Cheney ever gets out of jail. Just remember: when you're tempted to use this phrase in the common way, use "couldn't".

If that still doesn't make sense, perhaps you could care less about smoking pot, and probably should.

Potato Prophecies

This cartoon is significant for two reasons:

1. The crux of the idea came from a cartoon sent to me by
my e-friend, Derek, who went off on one of his rare diatribes in the comments section of this blog yesterday.
2. During the Super Bowl yesterday, there was a commercial featuring Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head.

Coincidence? Tom Cruise would say not.

Mr. Potato Head is a rich source of humor for cartoonists. Personally, my favorite aspect of the tuber folk is their detachable parts. I wonder if anyone has ever manufactured genitalia for the Potato Head line. I was careful when drawing this cartoon, for instance, to be sure the "lips" looked like a mouth. Although a plastic vagina would have been so much funnier.

When I was a kid back in the mid-1900s, we used real potatoes with these parts. It gives you far more creative options for placement when you don't have to rely on the pre-drilled holes. We also used to bring other vegetables into the storyline, dramatizing attacks from gangs of sideshow freaks or aliens from outer space.

As I write this, it occurs to me that the Potato Head line is missing a whole slew of opportunities for potato prosthetics. How about a mythology line with horns, cyclops eye, wings, animal appendages? Or a horror line with fangs, claws, melting facial features, a bloody gash. And why stop with potatoes? The cast of Broadway's "Cats" could be done with fruits. A Mr. Pumpkin Head line that looks like Rush Limbaugh seems like a natural for Right Wing kids in the Bible Belt.

Which brings to mind Bible-themed Potato Head toys. What fruit or veggy would Jesus be?
